Recently, I had a rather unsettling experience while using ChatGPT for a straightforward inquiry about selecting the appropriate sandpaper. Instead of receiving a helpful response, I was taken aback when the AI provided me with a detailed overview of someone’s drug test results, located hundreds of miles away from me.
To make matters worse, I was able to access a file containing sensitive information, including signatures and personal details. This unusual situation left me feeling overwhelmed and concerned about the potential implications. The ethical dilemma of sharing this information further complicated the issue, as I do not wish to propagate someone else’s private data.
In a follow-up to my initial post, I attempted to clarify my concerns, acknowledging that I don’t spend much time on Reddit, which may have contributed to some confusion. I did include a portion of the conversation transcript but took care to omit any sections where I inadvertently asked about my own information, fearing it may lead to the disclosure of additional sensitive data. Much to my surprise, the AI did mention personal details about me that I would prefer to keep offline.
While I am aware that AI can occasionally produce misleading or random information—often referred to as “hallucination”—I did take the necessary steps to verify the names mentioned in the response. They appeared to match up with real individuals in the respective geographic area. As a side note, I refer to my instance of ChatGPT as “Atlas,” hence the name’s appearance in my remarks.
