Unsettling Experience: A ChatGPT Encounter with Sensitive Information
Recently, I had an alarming experience while using ChatGPT that I feel compelled to share. What started as a simple inquiry about the type of sandpaper to use quickly escalated into a situation fraught with ethical and privacy-related concerns.
When I received a response, instead of the expected guidance, I was presented with an overview of an individual’s drug test, seemingly unrelated and originating from several states away. To my shock, the data included signatures and other sensitive identifiable details. Naturally, this left me feeling unsettled and concerned about the implications of what I had stumbled upon.
As a precaution, I refrained from sharing my complete chat history online, as I didn’t want to inadvertently distribute someone else’s information further. This led to an internal conflict: how to address the issue without perpetuating the very problem I was grappling with.
In a follow-up post, I clarified that I’m not a frequent Reddit user and offered a glimpse of the dialogue to provide context. After some reflection, I removed a portion where I had inquired, “What information do you know about me?” This question resulted in my own personal details being revealed, which was a revelation I was reluctant to have shared publicly.
While it’s possible that ChatGPT was merely generating erroneous information—a phenomenon often referred to as “hallucination”—I did take the time to verify certain names and details mentioned in the conversation, finding that they aligned with real-world locations.
