Variation 84: “Using ChatGPT, I received another person’s medical information from an unrelated query”

A Disturbing Encounter: Unexpected Personal Data from ChatGPT

I recently had an unsettling experience while using ChatGPT that I feel compelled to share. While seeking advice on what type of sandpaper to use for a DIY project, I received a response that took a surprising turn. Instead of the information I was expecting, I found myself with details about someone else’s drug test, including confidential signatures and sensitive information, all coming from a location far removed from my own.

This unexpected revelation left me feeling anxious and uncertain about what to do next. I realized that sharing the transcript of this interaction could inadvertently lead to further distribution of this individualโ€™s private information, which is the last thing I want.

To provide some context, I attempted to clarify my situation by commenting on the thread, where I shared a majority of the conversation. However, I deleted a portion where I posed the question, โ€œWhat information do you know about me?โ€ after realizing that it revealed personal details I prefer to keep off the internet. While it’s possible that ChatGPT generated these details through a process known as “hallucination,” I did a quick search on some names that appeared in the chat, and they appeared to align with actual individuals in the specified area.

For those curious about my ChatGPT experience, I had assigned the AI the name “Atlas,” which is why I reference it that way.

I understand that using platforms like Reddit can be overwhelming, especially when encountering heated reactions. I appreciate everyoneโ€™s insights and comments, and Iโ€™m genuinely hoping for guidance on how to navigate this bizarre situation.
