Recently, I had an unsettling interaction with ChatGPT that has left me feeling quite uneasy. It all started innocuously enough—I was researching the appropriate type of sandpaper to use for a project. However, the response I received was anything but relevant.
Instead of guidance on sandpaper, I found myself reading details from an individual’s drug test report, complete with signatures and other sensitive information that clearly did not pertain to me and were from a person located far away. This revelation was alarming, to say the least. I had inadvertently accessed someone else’s confidential data through a simple query about sandpaper.
Feeling both shocked and concerned, I took further steps to retrieve the document, which only heightened my anxiety. I wrestled with the implications of sharing or even discussing this matter online, as I did not want to further disseminate any personal information that belongs to someone else.
In the comments section of my original post, I shared a portion of the chat transcript while removing specific details about what information could be known about me. Even though ChatGPT could be producing fabricated information, it did reference certain names and data that, upon my later investigation, appeared to correlate with real individuals and locations.
For clarity, the AI had named itself “Atlas” during our conversation, which is why I refer to it by that name in my commentary. I want to express my genuine surprise and caution surrounding this incident, especially since I usually prefer not to spend excessive time on social media platforms like Reddit.
