Initially, I thought my Certbot question was silly—turns out, I was wrong.

Understanding Certbot and Redirects on AlmaLinux: A Personal Experience

Are you grappling with SSL certificate issues or redirect errors on your AlmaLinux server? You’re not alone. I recently faced a perplexing problem when setting up HTTPS certificates with Certbot after migrating my websites to a new server environment. Here’s a detailed account of my journey, which might help others in the same boat.

Background

I run an AlmaLinux server hosting multiple websites—about seven, to be precise. My setup was previously on a CentOS Stream 8 server, which I migrated manually. This involved copying website files with rsync, transferring configuration files, and backing up databases. Everything was configured to ensure a smooth transition.

The Challenge: Redirect Loops and Certbot Failures

Post-migration, I attempted to generate SSL certificates using Certbot. Initially, I encountered errors related to infinite redirects—Certbot was unable to install a certificate because of redirect loops that seemed to trap the process. Interestingly, the same setup worked flawlessly on CentOS Stream 8 but encountered issues on AlmaLinux.

Troubleshooting Insights

I tried various approaches: searching online for similar issues, inspecting configuration files, and even consulting AI-powered tools for advice. However, the solutions weren’t straightforward.

The turning point came unexpectedly. I opened each of my virtual host configuration files with Vim, then closed them without making any changes, and reran Certbot. Miraculously, the error disappeared without me modifying any setting. Just a simple edit-refresh cycle seemed to reset whatever was causing the redirect loop.

Conclusion

Sometimes, technical issues can resolve in surprising ways, even without direct intervention. In my case, something about opening and closing configuration files appeared to clear the problem, allowing Certbot to complete its process successfully.

If you’re facing similar SSL or redirect issues, don’t lose hope. Sometimes, a little patience and a simple file restart can do the trick. Cheers to problem-solving and server resilience!
