Understanding Ambiguous Design Requests: A Lesson in Clarity and Communication

In the realm of web development and design, clarity is crucial. Recently, I encountered a situation that highlighted the importance of precise requirements and effective communication within project workflows.

Imagine receiving a task with a brief note: “Create the brand’s look and feel.” No accompanying files, sketches, or visual references—only the brand’s logo. Naturally, this prompts questions: Does this mean establishing overall visual identity elements such as colors, typography, and style consistency? Or is it focused solely on specific components or screens?

In my case, I interpreted the directive as an opportunity to develop a comprehensive theming system. I crafted a flexible configuration-based approach, allowing quick updates to colors and fonts across the entire application. It was designed to be scalable and adaptable, aligning with best practices for maintainable design systems.

However, the context shifted unexpectedly. After presentation, I was informed that the task was more limited—focused solely on making the login page visually appealing with the brand’s colors. I offered to extend my theming solution to cover this individual screen, but received no response. Shortly afterward, I was unexpectedly removed from the project.

This experience was compounded by vague, unprofessional comments from project management, which added to the confusion. It raised pertinent questions about how to navigate ambiguous instructions, both from a technical and communication perspective.
