Introducing New Tab Widgets: A Customizable Productivity Dashboard for Your Browser
Are you looking to enhance your browsing experience with a highly personalized and functional dashboard? After nearly four years of dedicated development, I’m excited to unveil my latest project: New Tab Widgets, a versatile Chrome extension designed to transform your new tab page into a powerful productivity hub.
Overview
Initially conceived as a simple tool to control Philips Hue lighting directly from a new tab, this project has grown into a comprehensive customizable dashboard that I now rely on daily. Built for Chromium-based browsers, New Tab Widgets allows you to embed a variety of widgets, tailor their appearance, and add numerous features to suit your workflow.
Key Features
-
Custom Iframe Widgets:
Easily embed external web content by targeting specific elements with CSS selectors. For instance, I display GitHub issues from my repositories and live Yahoo Finance tickers, but the possibilities are endless. -
Essential Productivity Tools:
Incorporate weather updates, world clocks, quick access link bookmarks and groups, and sticky notes to keep important information at your fingertips. -
Smart Home Integration:
Control your Philips Hue smart lights with scene and group widgets. Manage individual lights with on/off toggles, color adjustments, and scene switching—all via intuitive right-click menus. -
Quick Launchers:
Launch Steam games or applications directly from your dashboard without leaving the page. -
Advanced Search Functionality:
Multiple search engine support with access to your local search history for quick retrieval. -
Calendar Sync:
Integrate your Google Calendar to stay updated on your schedule within the dashboard. -
Highly Configurable:
Widgets can be customized through JSON configurations and styled with your own CSS for a truly personalized look. -
Optional Welcome Screen:
Set up a friendly greeting or onboarding message to appear when opening a new tab.
