How would you approach a task that simply instructs to develop the brand’s visual identity?

Understanding Ambiguous Design Requests: A Lesson in Clarity and Communication

In the world of development and design, clear requirements are crucial for delivering successful projects. Recently, I encountered a situation that underscored the importance of precise communication and clarified expectations.

Imagine being assigned a task with a minimal brief: “Create the brand’s look and feel.” No visual references, no style guides, just the brand’s logo. Naturally, I interpreted this as a request to develop the visual identity—colors, typography, and consistent visual elements—aiming for a scalable and flexible theming system that could be applied across the entire application.

I committed to creating a dynamic solution where theme parameters could be easily adjusted to update the aesthetic throughout the platform. It was an approach aimed at future-proofing the design and ensuring consistency.

However, the clarification came only after I presented my work. I was told the actual expectation was for the login screen specifically, to “look nice” with the brand’s colors. Despite offering to extend my theming logic to include that page, I received no response. A few hours later, I was unexpectedly removed from the project.

Throughout the process, there were no negative comments about my work—only an offhand remark from the project manager during a daily standup, which felt somewhat unprofessional and unnecessary.

This experience brings up important questions:

  • How should developers and designers interpret vague directives like “create a look and feel”?
  • Was my focus on building a comprehensive, scalable theming system misplaced?
  • How can teams improve communication to avoid such misunderstandings?

Navigating ambiguous requirements requires proactive clarification and ongoing dialogue. When faced with vague instructions, it’s often beneficial to seek specific details or examples that define the scope more clearly, ensuring everyone is aligned.

What strategies do you use when confronted with minimal or unclear project briefs? Share your insights and experiences—your input can help refine our collective approach to such challenges.

Thank you for engaging with this reflection.
