After 18 Months Developing a Design System that Creates “Oddly Satisfying” UI Experiences – Now Available as Open Source!

Introducing LiftKit: An Open-Source Design System Rooted in the Golden Ratio

After 18 months of dedicated development, I’m excited to unveil LiftKit—a unique design system that brings a sense of “oddly satisfying” harmony to user interface components. This innovative project is now available to the public as an open-source resource for developers and designers alike.

A Brief Background

My journey began with a YouTube video titled “The Secret Science of Perfect Spacing,” which gained some recognition within the UI design community. Motivated by the positive response, I decided to transform that concept into a comprehensive, practical design system—LiftKit—named after my company, Chainlift.

What Makes LiftKit Special?

LiftKit is built to enhance user interfaces by employing a consistent scaling approach inspired by the golden ratio. The system’s core idea is to create visual harmony and satisfaction through carefully calibrated UI elements. Currently, LiftKit supports popular frameworks like Next.js and React, with ongoing plans to expand its capabilities.

Key Features

  • Dynamic Theme Customization: Includes a built-in theme controller with a user interface, leveraging Material 3’s dynamic color features for a vibrant, adaptable look.
  • Open-Source Accessibility: Fully available on GitHub for collaboration, customization, and further development.
  • Visual Showcase: See sample designs and examples on the dedicated landing page to grasp LiftKit’s aesthetic and practical potential.
  • Comprehensive Documentation and Tutorials: Easy-to-follow guides to help you get started quickly and effectively.

Looking Ahead

My future priorities include developing a live playground where users can experiment with different app designs using LiftKit, as well as gathering feedback from the community to refine and enhance the system.

While this initial release marks Just the beginning (v1.0.0), I believe it offers a solid foundation for creating visually satisfying interfaces. I invite you to explore LiftKit, try it out, and share your thoughts. Your input will be invaluable in shaping its evolution.
