Launching a Full-Stack Mental Fitness App: Insights from the Development of MindLoom
Creating a comprehensive web application from scratch is an exhilarating, often challenging process. Recently, I embarked on such a journey to develop MindLoom, a mental wellness platform designed for busy students and professionals. Over the course of approximately two months, I navigated various technical hurdles and refined a project that now stands as a working prototype. I’m excited to share this progress and invite constructive feedback from the developer community.
Project Concept and Goals
MindLoom aims to serve as a quick, 5-minute daily mental wellness routine. Its core features include:
- Journaling and mood tracking to reflect and monitor emotional well-being.
- Guided breathing exercises to promote relaxation.
- An AI-powered personal coach (CalmBot), integrated via the Gemini API, offering personalized support.
The intention is to provide a lightweight, proactive alternative to traditional meditation or therapy apps—an accessible tool for fostering mental resilience in daily life.
Current Achievements
So far, the MVP (Minimum Viable Product) includes:
- Functional journaling and mood logging workflows.
- An interactive breathing exercise module.
- A prototype of the AI coaching feature, demonstrating real-time responses.
Areas for Improvement
While the core functionalities are in place, several aspects need polishing:
- The overall UI exhibits inconsistent design elements across different pages.
- The user authentication system currently feels cumbersome.
- The AI coach sometimes responds in tones that lack the intended calmness.
Acknowledgments and Collaborations
Building this project was a collaborative effort, leveraging various external resources:
- 3D animations supplied by Lightswind.
- Research insights from my partner at Perplexity.
- Coding and debugging support from ChatGPT and the Gemini API.
