How would you define artificial intelligence (AI)?

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence processes by computer systems. This encompasses various capabilities, such as learning from experiences (machine learning), understanding natural language (natural language processing), recognizing patterns and making predictions (data analytics), and making decisions based on data input. AI can be categorized into two primary types: narrow AI, which focuses on a specific task (such as virtual assistants or recommendation algorithms), and general AI, which aims to perform any cognitive task that a human can do, though this latter form remains largely theoretical at present.

AI technologies are implemented across numerous sectors, including healthcare, finance, transportation, and education, enhancing efficiency and enabling innovations in how tasks are conducted. The development and integration of AI raise important ethical and societal questions, particularly regarding privacy, job displacement, and decision-making transparency, prompting ongoing discussions about the responsible use of such technology.
