Any old dudes like me who feel peak web os over (& could have done more)?

Is the Era of the Web Really Over? Reflecting on Two Decades of Digital Evolution

As I recently celebrated my 40th birthday, I’ve been reflecting on nearly 20 years of being involved in the web development space. Throughout this journey, I’ve built a career primarily as a freelance contractorโ€”navigating the shifting landscape, embracing new technologies, and working with diverse clients.

However, reaching this milestone has prompted a deeper look back at how much has changed since the early days of the internet. Back then, ranking organically was often as simple as optimizing your meta tags; many initial ideas had yet to be explored, making it surprisingly accessible to create new, impactful websites. Building something meaningful felt more attainable, and the time invested often offered more tangible rewards without relying solely on transactional work.

Now, standing on the other side of that era, I can’t help but feel a sense of missed opportunity. While I did find success and generate income in this vibrant industryโ€”which, I acknowledge, is more competitive and challenging todayโ€”I can’t help but wonder how different things could have been if I had taken greater risks or prioritized different projects.

Does anyone else share this sentiment? Do you look back and feel the web has shifted beyond what it used to be?

A Final Reflection

I’ve been surprised and touched by the responses this post has garnered. Itโ€™s clear Iโ€™m not alone in feeling nostalgic about a time when the web seemed full of limitless potential. For now, I choose to appreciate that we were part of an exciting, formative period in digital historyโ€”a time that, in many ways, paved the way for today’s online landscape.

While I might have missed some opportunities to build projects with higher long-term gains, I recognize that the choices I made were still valid and contributed to my journey. The web may have evolved, but the foundation we helped build remains a testament to the innovation and enthusiasm of those early days.

Let’s remember that every phase of the web’s evolution has its unique challenges and triumphs, and our experiencesโ€”both successes and regretsโ€”are part of what makes the digital world so fascinating today.
