A Disturbing Encounter: Sharing Private Medical Data via ChatGPT
Recently, I had a rather alarming experience with a popular AI tool that highlights some of the unforeseen risks associated with Artificial Intelligence in our daily lives. I initially sought guidance on what type of sandpaper would be best for a home project, a simple enough inquiry. However, the response I received was anything but expected.
To my astonishment, the AI provided me with detailed information regarding an individual’s drug testing results, including signatures and various personal details, all from someone located miles away from me. Can you imagine my shock? The juxtaposition of my innocuous question and the sensitive medical information I received was deeply unsettling.
Conflicted and uncertain about the next steps, I hesitated to share the details publicly. My primary concern was not to further disseminate this person’s private information, which I clearly had no right to possess or share.
In an effort to clarify my situation, I want to address some of the reactions to my initial post. Many seemed surprised that I hadn’t spent more time on Reddit, and I understand that engagement varies from person to person. I did share a portion of the chat transcript to illustrate my experience, although I chose to withhold a section where I inquired about what information the AI might have on me. In that instance, the AI revealed certain personal details I would prefer to keep private.
I recognize that there’s a possibility that the AI was simply generating false information, often referred to as “hallucination” in AI terminology. Nonetheless, after some research on the names included in the response, I found they seemed to align with known locations, raising further questions about the situation.
For those curious about my chatbot, it named itself “Atlas” during our interaction, which is another layer of this bizarre experience.
As I reflect on this incident, it is a stark reminder of the importance of privacy and data security in our increasingly connected world.
