As we navigate through 2025, a question looms large in the minds of many local entrepreneurs: Are online business directories still being utilized? This inquiry sparks a passionate inner dialogue reflected by my journey in launching a community-focused directory back in January 2000.
Initially born out of personal necessity, my directory aimed to assist me, a first-time at-home mom, in keeping track of family-friendly activities in my area. At a time when such platforms were virtually non-existent, I created a space that resonated with my community. To my surprise, the site flourished, drawing significant traffic for over a decade and consistently landing on the first page of local search results.
The directory garnered a loyal user base, and I frequently encountered individuals who relied on it. I took immense pride in the project, knowing it provided value to local families.
However, as life took its courseโraising children and managing a hectic family lifeโI found it challenging to devote time to the directory. Sadly, nearly a decade has passed with little to no updates or traffic. But now, with my children grown, I am eager to revive my project. I’ve enlisted the help of family members and begun an extensive overhaul of the website using WordPress. I’m excited to gather the information from my carefully maintained spreadsheet and ensure its accuracy with my son’s assistance.
My vision for the directory remains clear: I want to maintain its uniqueness by avoiding overwhelming advertisements that can detract from user experience. Nevertheless, to create a sustainable platform, I recognize the necessity of generating revenue. Thus, I’m planning to reintroduce paid listing options. While I donโt anticipate making a fortune, a gradual increase in traffic could eventually lead to a healthier income stream.
