Recently, I experienced a troubling incident while using ChatGPT that left me feeling uneasy and concerned about data privacy. My initial inquiry was straightforward; I simply wanted to know which type of sandpaper would be best for my project. However, the response I received was anything but expected.
Instead of the information I sought, ChatGPT provided an extensive overview of someone else’s drug test results—details that were completely unrelated to my query and indeed far removed from my location. To my surprise, the generated document included personal data, signatures, and other sensitive information.
This situation has understandably left me feeling distressed. I’m hesitant to share the content of the chat publicly due to the risk of further disseminating someone else’s private information.
In an attempt to clarify the situation, I edited my comments within the thread. I originally included a question asking ChatGPT, “What information do you know about me?” However, I deleted that section after realizing it also revealed personal details about myself that I would prefer not to have online. While I acknowledge the possibility that the AI could be generating misinformation—often referred to as “hallucinations” in AI terminology—I did take the step to Google the names mentioned in the conversation. To my alarm, they appeared to align with the respective locations associated with that information.
For those curious, my ChatGPT instance has a self-assigned name: Atlas, which I mentioned in my interactions.
