Insights from the Google Web Creator Conversation Event: A Publisher’s Perspective
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the highly discussed Google Web Creator Conversation Event. While our presence on platforms like Reddit is typically minimal, the conversations surrounding this event have prompted me to share my insights on a blog.
For context, I would like to clarify that I don’t consider myself an SEO expert. My journey in travel blogging spans over 12 years, during which I have accumulated knowledge and experience through trial and errorโmuch of which is shared among fellow travel creators.
Challenges Facing Creators
From my observations, it’s clear that the landscape for online publishers is shifting, and it’s unlikely we will revert to the status quo we experienced prior to September 2023. The event itself was infused with the usual corporate jargon, leading to a lack of concrete answers to pressing questions.
Several key issues were evident:
– No Resolution in Sight: There was no clear timeline or commitment from Google to address our ongoing challenges.
– Silence on Sensitive Topics: Discussions around site-wide classifiers, often referred to as shadow bans, were notably absent.
– A Reliance on Temporary Fixes: It seems as if the focus is shifting towards implementing band-aid solutions rather than fundamentally addressing the ranking algorithm’s shortcomings.
Moreover, the fear surrounding substantial changes within Google’s systems is palpable, stemming from concerns over potential disruptions caused by “bad actors” or spammers. It was particularly disheartening to hear reassurances like โitโs probably not youโ and โkeep creating great contentโwe’ll catch up.โ Despite these sentiments, many of us are grappling with the pressing reality of dwindling revenue streams.
Additionally, I learned that the Search team at Google operates in a bubble distinct from their Ads counterparts and other teams, leading to a significant communication gap.
Positive Developments
Despite these challenges, there were some encouraging takeaways from the event:
– A Direct Line to Leadership: For the first time, we, as small and independent publishers, have gained access to higher-ups, including Danny Sullivan, who genuinely seems invested in advocating for our interests.
– Engagement with Search Engineers: This event marked a milestone, bringing Google Search engineers face-to-face with publishers. It was eye-opening to realize their unfamiliarity with how we operate as creators and where we source our SEO guidance. Their eagerness to learn and brainstorm ways to foster a supportive creator ecosystem stood out.
