Unlocking Business Growth Through Innovative Digital Marketing: A Case Study from Bangaloreโ€™s Brewing Scene

In todayโ€™s competitive market, innovative Digital Marketing strategies can transform a small business into an industry trendsetter. Reflecting on a success story from approximately seven years ago, I want to share how a creative approach to customer engagement and strategic partnerships helped a Bangalore-based brewery, Shakesbierre Brewpub and Kitchen, establish a lasting presence โ€” and inspire widespread adoption across the industry.

Background and Context

With a background in computer science and a passion for leveraging digital solutions to solve business challenges, I was tasked with driving growth for Shakesbierre. At the time, the brewery was a burgeoning establishment looking to differentiate itself in Bangaloreโ€™s vibrant craft beer scene.

While I executed multiple initiativesโ€”ranging from forming official vehicle rental partnerships with Manchester United to other innovative tacticsโ€”one particular strategy stands out as a game-changer.

The Power of Creative Partnerships: A Growth Hack

The most memorable and impactful growth hack involved collaborating with a then-new startup called DriveU, which has since become a well-known player in Bangaloreโ€™s mobility ecosystem.

Understanding the Opportunity

DriveU operated a driver-booking service, allowing users to book a driver for various needsโ€”from daily commutes to social outings. I had personally used their service for the common scenario of drinking and drivingโ€”a relatable problem for many and an area with clear business potential.

Approach and Proposal

I approached the DriveU founders directly, presenting a mutually beneficial opportunity. I proposed that every weekend, DriveU could send push notifications to their active user base, offering a special promotion: free ride coverage for customers visiting Shakesbierre. Specifically, users would have their booking charges waivedโ€”roughly 500 INR (about $8 at the time)โ€”if they visited the brewery.

Business Justification

This promotion made sense on multiple levels:

  • Customer Convenience: Safe transportation encouraged responsible drinking and improved customer experience.
  • Business Impact: On average, three patrons visited the brewery per vehicle, with each patron typically spending around 1500 INR (~$24). For these groups, the breweryโ€™s revenue could reach approximately 4500 INR (~$72).
  • Profit Margins: The cost of offering free rides (~$8) was negligible compared to the revenue generated, resulting in gross margins exceeding 60%.
