Introducing yWhois: A Modern Tool for IP, Domain, and ASN Lookup with RDAP
In today’s digital landscape, efficient access to domain and IP information is vital for cybersecurity, network management, and research. Recently, I’ve enhanced yWhois, a comprehensive lookup utility designed to simplify this process, making it more reliable and scalable.
Originally launched last year, yWhois allows users to perform detailed lookups of IP addresses, domain names, and Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs) using RDAP—a next-generation protocol intended to replace traditional WHOIS services. Since its initial release, I’ve implemented significant improvements to address performance issues, notably the challenge of rate limiting during high traffic periods. To tackle this, I’ve integrated multiple worker servers, which should help ensure consistent performance even when demand spikes.
It’s somewhat surprising that the public RDAP service provided by many registrars, including some major ones, imposes strict API usage limits—despite the protocol’s premise as a modernized replacement for WHOIS. Nonetheless, I remain committed to refining yWhois and advocating for more generous API policies, as this tool strives to serve as a reliable resource for professionals and enthusiasts alike.
