As a Frontend Developer for a company that once enjoyed a solid reputation on Trustpilot, I feel compelled to discuss some troubling experiences we had with the platform that ultimately led us to part ways with it about a year ago.

One of the first things that struck me was how difficult it is to remove a business profile from Trustpilot. The platform promotes itself as a champion of transparency, but the truth is, some of their practices raise serious red flags.

Hereโ€™s how it typically plays out: dissatisfied customers often flock to Trustpilot to share their grievances, leaving behind heartfelt one-star reviews. While itโ€™s fair that these voices are heard, we found ourselves in an awkward position: wanting to encourage satisfied customers to leave positive feedback as well.

However, when we attempted to link our clients to our Trustpilot profile for reviews, we hit a roadblock. Trustpilot informed us that promoting our profile without paying a fee was against their rules. This effectively means that if you want to gather reviews from loyal customers, youโ€™ll have to fork over some cash.

And speaking of costs, paying โ‚ฌ500 a month for the privilege of collecting a limited number of reviews feels exorbitant, particularly considering the indifferent service and subpar product they provide. Whatโ€™s worse is the “Customer Success Manager” assigned to guide us, who bombarded me with overly enthusiastic messages about how we could tag reviews or utilize their API for filtered results. Yes, an API that offers filtered resultsโ€”groundbreaking! They seemed thrilled that we resumed our subscription, but I was left shaking my head.

We’re currently formulating a plan to exit Trustpilot for good, and I encourage others to consider doing the same. Trustpilot contributes to the degradation of online experiences, all while profiting handsomely from it. Itโ€™s time we collectively rethink our reliance on such platforms.
