Google AI (SGE) While Browsing No Longer Available

Google AI (SGE) Feature Now Discontinued

19 months ago, Google introduced a feature initially known as SGE while browsing, which was later rebranded to AI while browsing. Unfortunately, this feature has now been discontinued and officially removed from Google’s offerings.

In a recent announcement, Google stated, “The AI while browsing feature is no longer available.”

Additionally, Google has updated its documentation on paywalled structured data by removing the mention of AI while browsing. Previously, the documentation included a line indicating that “AI tools while browsing, distinct from AI Overviews, will not display key points for paywalled articles if paywall structured data is present on the page.”

According to Google, “AI while browsing was developed to enhance user engagement with long-form content from publishers and creators, making it easier to locate specific information while exploring the web.” The feature allowed users to tap on certain web pages to view an AI-generated summary of key points in an article, along with direct links to the relevant sections.

One response to “Google AI (SGE) While Browsing No Longer Available”

  1. Itโ€™s interesting to see how quickly features in the tech space can change, especially something like Googleโ€™s AI browsing tool, which was intended to enhance user engagement with long-form content. The idea of providing key points and direct navigation to relevant sections of an article sounded promising, but it seems that it didn’t resonate enough with users or perhaps encountered challenges that weren’t solvable.

Deprecating features can be a tough decision for companies like Google, but it’s crucial for them to focus on tools that truly add value. Users have a range of needs when it comes to content consumption, and it will be intriguing to see where Google directs its efforts next. It might also open the door for competitors to innovate in similar spaces. What are your thoughts on AI tools for content consumption? Do you think theyโ€™re more beneficial or disruptive?
